There are two versions of the Model 83 Windows® software. One version is designed for use with Windows® 95/98/ME, and the other version is designed for use with Windows® 2000 Pro and XP Pro.
It gets more complicated if you are using Windows® NT. If you are running Windows® NT with up to service pack 4, use the version designed for Windows® 95/98/ME. If you are running Windows® NT with service pack 5 or higher, use the version designed for Windows® 2000 Pro and XP Pro.
Many new computers don't have a serial port to
interface with the Model 83, and Model 84. The solution is to use
a USB to serial adapter. Not all USB to serial adapters work; however, we have
tested two widely available adapters. These adapters worked with a Model 83
on both a Windows® 2000 Pro and a Windows® XP Pro system. Note that you still
must use the regular serial cable to connect between the adapter and an Oehler
system.

Before either of these adapters can be used, its driver software must be installed. Follow the instructions included with the adapter you purchase. Once installed you need to determine which Com port the adapter is set to. If it is installed to Com port 5 or higher, you must reset it to Com port 1, 2, 3, or 4. The instructions included with the adapters provide detailed instructions for setting the Com port.
